At Kilmore and Wallan we are very excited to announce that we are now able to provide shockwave treatment to our clients !

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy or shock wave for short is a new and effective treatment option for patients suffering from a variety of musculoskeletal issues. The shockwaves are abrupt, high amplitude pulses of mechanical energy, similar to sound waves produced by a specialized machine and delivered by a trained practitioner.

The precise physiological mechanism is not currently fully understood however it appears that shockwaves cause a small amount of acute microtrauma to the damaged area. This microtrauma stimulates angiogenesis (new blood vessels) and neurogenesis (new nerve cells). This more acute response produced by shockwave stimulates wound healing mechanisms and the removal of damaged tissue matrix constitutes.

Shockwave therapy is an excellent option for patients with chronic tendon issues which are not responding well to conservative management techniques.

In a podiatry setting there is strong evidence to support the use of shockwave in the following conditions:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis, both mid-portional and insertional

Other tendinopathies may also benefit from shockwave therapy.

Typically most patients will begin to see a significant decrease in their pain levels after 3 to 5 sessions of shockwave. Best results are seen when appointments can be spaced 72 hours apart.

As we are applying a force to a damaged area some discomfort is normal during the procedure however we can tailor the shock wave machine to provide more or less force if required.

If you or someone you know suffers from heel pain or any type of foot pain, please call to book in for a thorough assessment by one of our qualified Podiatrist’s or book online.

We look forward to getting you back on your feet with no pain soon!
